Genre: Historical Fiction
This is the first book I’ve ever read excluding the non-detailed stories that we had as part of our high school curriculum. I chose this book for two main reasons – Khushwant Singh, a renowned Indian author & journalist and the subject of book itself (of course, I went with the title).
Generally, I don’t enjoy fiction as much as nonfiction or biographies, but this book is exceptional. As you read, you’ll believe that the incidents in the book actually happened, fostering empathy for those who faced the partition struggles on both sides of the border, known as the famous Radcliffe Line.
Above all, the book unfolds a beautiful love story between a Muslim girl and a Sikh boy in a border village of Punjab and how partition not only separated the two countries but the two lovers and what they could do for each other amid the ongoing massacre. Through the transition from harmonious living to killing each other, the occasional references of railway bridge, railway station, two scheduled passenger trains gracefully link the lives of villagers to them.
I give my whole-hearted recommendation to read this book and live the times of our past.
